Six international retailers coming to the U.S. in 2020

August 21, 2019

1. Muji

This Japanese lifestyle brand, established in 1980, sells home furnishings, apparel, food and more. Its first U.S. store opened about a decade ago. Growth has been slow and steady, but observers anticipate accelerated expansion ahead, as the brand is building a loyal following in the U.S. In March Muji opened a 9,200-square-foot store at Hudson Yards, followed by an 11,800-square-foot store in Midtown Manhattan in July.

2. Pronovias

This Spanish bridal retailer opened a store in New York City in June, followed by one that same month in Coral Gables, Fla. The company has stepped up expansion in the U.S. and China following a majority investment in 2017 from private equity investment firm BC Partners. Pronovias is reportedly planning to open additional stores by year-end in Beverly Hills, Calif.; Boston; Austin, Texas; and Philadelphia, with seven more on tap for 2020.

3. Indigo Books & Music

Toronto-based Indigo is Canada’s largest book, gift and specialty-toy retailer, operating nearly 90 superstores and roughly 100 small-format stores, under the Indigo and Chapters banners. Its first U.S. store opened in October 2018 — a 30,000-square-foot Indigo store at the Mall at Short Hills, in New Jersey.

4. Camilla

Australian designer and artist Camilla Franks launched Camilla in 2004 as a bohemian luxury-apparel concept for women, men and children. The company opened its first U.S. stores at Miami’s Aventura Mall (in April) and at South Coast Plaza, in Costa Mesa, Calif. (in May).

5. Byredo

This European luxury brand was founded in Stockholm, Sweden, in 2006. Byredo fragrances, leather goods and accessories are sold in some 40 countries. The company’s first U.S. store opened in New York City in 2015. Byredo followed up with a store at Miami’s Aventura Mall this past July.

6. Ganni

Ganni is a Copenhagen, Denmark–based upscale women’s apparel brand. It has plans to enter the U.S. with two stores set to open this fall, in New York City and Los Angeles. The retailer is capitalizing on strong momentum, including favorable buzz from some of the fashion industry’s top influencers. Ganni clothing is sold online and at Bergdorf Goodman and other stores.
