Lego says it will open more than 160 stores across the globe this year as part of a strategy to make sure that its products continue to reach customers, despite turmoil in the toy-store sector.
“We want to ensure that we stay really relevant even though there will be changes in the retail landscape,” said Lego CEO Niels Christiansen, as reported in Financial Times. “We still need kids to discover Lego. It’s about making sure we have the right access to kids.”

The world’s largest toy maker by sales and profits is determined not to allow the collapse of such chains as Toys R Us and Scandinavia’s Top-Toy to hinder its own progress. The Danish company reports that its revenues grew by 4 percent in the first half and that it was deliberately sacrificing short-term profit in order to invest more in stores and e-commerce.
“We have the ambition of getting to as many kids as we can around the world, and getting to that means we have to keep gaining market share,” Christiansen told the newspaper. Lego says it will have about 140 stores operating in China by the end of this year, and that it also has plans for an expansion into India.
Moreover, the company is investing in digital play apps designed to complement its physical products. “Kids want to play with what they have seen,” Christiansen said. “It’s never just about the physical products, it about the entire experience.”
