U.S. retail sales grew 5.8 percent last week: Report

January 29, 2019

Same-store sales at U.S. retailers grew by 5.8 percent year on year for the week ended Jan. 26, according to Econoday's Redbook. This is a 1.2 percent decline from the prior week's pace, the weakest reading in a year.

Month-to-date sales against the prior month declined by 1.8 percent. The full month year-on-year growth pace declined by three-tenths of a percentage point, to 6.5 percent.

The slowdown indicates that sales are beginning to moderate after explosive growth in December, the firm reports.
