Albertsons
Same-store sales for Albertsons grew by 2.4 percent in the second quarter. The Boise, Idaho–based supermarket conglomerate also reported a 40 percent increase in online home-delivery and Drive Up & Go store-pickup sales. During the first half of this year, the company opened seven stores and completed remodels on nearly 100, as part of roughly $716 million in capital expenditures. Meanwhile, Albertsons finalized the sale and leaseback during the quarter of 53 store properties and one distribution center, for an aggregate price of $931.3 million (net of closing costs). The lease agreements for each of these properties have initial terms ranging from 15 to 20 years. Supermarket News
Barneys New York
High-end department-store chain Barneys New York says it will close all seven of its stores, according to bankruptcy papers. Authentic Brands Group and investment firm B. Riley Financial are buying the Barneys name and other assets out of bankruptcy, in partnership with Saks Fifth Avenue. Saks is then to create Barneys shops within its own stores. Sources tell the media that some of the stores may remain open, subject to talks with the landlords, though court papers say all seven will shut. Mass Live
BJ's Wholesale Club
The retailer's stores in Florida, Ohio, North Carolina and Virginia join those in Massachusetts and Connecticut now providing delivery of alcoholic beverages. In North Carolina and Virginia, delivery is offered for beer and wine only. The Westborough, Mass.–based warehouse-club chain works with Instacart to offer online grocery-delivery services. Destination Maternity
The company that operates the Destination Maternity, Motherhood Maternity and A Pea in the Pod banners has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection and says it will close 183 of its 446 stores. USA Today
Nordstrom
Seattle-based department-store chain Nordstrom says its 320,000-square-foot store in New York City's Midtown is designed to "reflect the spirit of the city." The store has seven floors of products and services and offers in-store restaurants and bars. NPR
Seventy Venezia
This Milan-based women's fashion chain will open its first U.S. store, a New York City flagship, in 2021. The retailer, whose merchandise is sold in U.S. Nordstrom and Saks Fifth Avenue stores, already operates six European stores. WWD (subscription)
Target
Discount chain Target opened a small-format store in New York City's Upper East Side neighborhood. This 23,000-square-foot store, the Minneapolis-based retailer's sixth in New York City, is attached to TF Cornerstone's Fairfax condominium tower. Patch
Wawa
Pennsylvania-based Wawa opened its 200th Florida convenience store, in Naples — seven years after the rollout of its very first in that state. This new store, in a former bookstore space, is the convenience chain's only nonfuel unit in the state. Convenience Store News
