Sears to open small-format stores

April 4, 2019

Sears is opening stores again — albeit smaller ones — having closed hundreds in recent years.

The stores, ranging in size from 10,000 to 15,000 square feet, will sell tools, appliances and other hard goods under the Sears Home & Life banner, reports The Wall Street Journal.

“This is part of an overall strategy to revitalize Sears,” said Peter Boutros, chief brand officer for Sears and Kmart, as reported in the newspaper. “We want to be the go-to destination for appliances, mattresses, repairs and maintenance of all your household needs.”

The stores, three in number, will open in May, in Anchorage, Alaska; Lafayette, La.; and Overland Park, Kan.

Sears Holdings Corp., owner of Sears and Kmart, filed for bankruptcy in October, closing hundreds of stores. The remaining 220 Sears and 205 Kmart stores were sold to Edward Lampert, the retailer’s former chief executive.
