Physical retailers, centers — big winners during holidays

The 2017 holiday season was a busy one at physical retailers and shopping centers. Holiday shoppers spent more during this year's holidays than in holiday season 2016, and nearly all of them (95 percent) purchased goods from retailers with brick-and-mortar stores, according to ICSC Research.

In total, 92 percent of Americans did some holiday shopping in 2017, and they spent, on average, $842 each on gifts and other holiday-related items, up from $711 each in 2016.

Breaking down the 95 percent of shoppers who bought from retailers with stores, 90 percent of them did so at the stores themselves, while 58 percent shopped from the physical retailers’ websites. Of holiday shoppers, 40 percent opted to collect the merchandise from the stores rather than have it delivered. “Click-and-collect” shopping is proving to be a boon for retailers, because 90 percent of those who shop this way go on to buy more merchandise when picking up the order.

The popularity of click-and-collect shopping has grown since 2016, when 35 percent of online shoppers shopped this way, and 61 percent of them bought additional goods while at the store to pick up an online order.

Gift-buying was only part of the story for landlords and tenants: Holiday shoppers also spent an average of $262 each at shopping centers on dining, movies and other entertainment or personal services during the holiday season.
