French sporting-goods chain moves into former Toys ‘R’ Us store

October 10, 2018

French sporting-goods retailer Decathlon is moving into a former Toys 'R' Us store as it branches out in its latest foray into the U.S. market.

Landlord Benderson Development purchased the defunct toy retailer’s empty, 47,000-square-foot store at its East Bay Bridge shopping center, in Emeryville, Calif., and leased it to Decathlon. Decathlon will open next spring.

The retailer, which operates 14,000 stores across 42 countries, opened its first U.S. store in a decade in downtown San Francisco in April. Decathlon previously attempted to enter the U.S. in 1999, when it acquired 18 MVP Sports stores. The retailer closed all those in 2006.

“We strategically chose to open a smaller-scale store in [San Francisco] before expanding to this larger [Emeryville] retail center in order to better understand the needs of local sports enthusiasts and develop our interconnected retail and online experience,” said Decathlon USA’s CEO, Michel d’Humières, as reported in E’Ville Eye. “Since our launch, we’ve had an enthusiastic response to our store and have developed a thriving relationship with the community, and we’ve decided it’s time to introduce the U.S. to our first full-service Decathlon store environment.”
