Food-service industry hiring up, retail down, jobs report shows

June 7, 2019

Retail employment declined slightly in May, but certain store categories took on more employees, according to the latest jobs report from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Overall, retailers shed some 7,600 workers. Clothing and accessories stores lost the highest number of jobs — 12,700 — while health and personal-care stores laid off roughly one-quarter of that: 3,200 workers.

On the other hand, miscellaneous retailers actually took on some 3,100 more people, while the total general-merchandise stores category grew by about 6,200 jobs.

Food-service and drinking establishments added on nearly 17,000 jobs during the month.

Inclusive of all industry sectors, total nonfarm employment increased by about 75,000 in May, with unemployment levels holding at 3.6 percent, according to the report.
