August Sees Continued Advocacy on Behalf of ORC Legislation

August 31, 2023
  • ICSC Vice President of State Government Relations Jim Hill joined lead sponsors of the Combating Organized Retail Crime Act (S. 140/H.R. 895), Senator Catherine Cortez Masto (D-NV), Congresswomen Susie Lee (D-NV-3) and Dina Titus (D-NV-1), plus law enforcement officials at a roundtable discussion at a Las Vegas Home Depot.
  • ICSC Vice President of Public Policy Abby Jagoda briefed the Downtown DC Business Improvement District on S. 140/H.R. 895. National retailers including Macy’s, Sephora and Express were present, as well as neighborhood businesses. Business owners and managers expressed concern regarding DC’s response to the spike in ORC throughout the city and the resulting growth in vacancies in the downtown commercial corridor.
  • ICSC Western Division Innovation Chair Alesha Shemwell of Kemper Development participated in a press conference and store tour of a Target in Issaquah, WA with Congresswoman Kim Schrier (D-WA-8), a cosponsor of S. 140/H.R. 895. “Organized retail theft has become increasingly violent and dangerous for employees and for customers,” Schrier said. “These stolen goods are sold online, and the money these crime rings bring in fuels other illicit activities related to trafficking of drugs, trafficking of people and weapons, and more."
