Milton Peterson, founder and chairman of Peterson Cos., has died at age 85. Peterson built one of the largest privately held real estate development companies in the Washington, D.C., region, focusing on mixed-use retail, residential and office developments in Northern Virginia and suburban Maryland. In the 1990s, he partnered with Montgomery County and Foulger-Pratt to transform several deteriorated blocks in Maryland into Downtown Silver Spring, a shopping, dining and entertainment destination that continues to thrive today. Peterson modeled his most ambitious project — National Harbor in Prince George’s County, Maryland — on Barcelona’s Las Ramblas and Rome’s Spanish Steps. Today, National Harbor encompasses more than 8 million square feet on 350 acres and welcomes more than 28 million visitors annually.
A link will be made available on the Peterson Cos. website on the morning of June 9 for those who wish to view that day’s memorial service. Memorial donations may be made to Inova Life with Cancer or to a charity of one’s choice. To share a memory of Milt with his family, email memoriesofmilt@petersoncos.com.
