ICSC holds inaugural Beyond Sustainability Summit

February 6, 2019

Earlier this week 40 of retail real estate’s top sustainability professionals gathered in Miami for the first ICSC Beyond Sustainability Summit.

The program included briefings on resiliency and data collection, as well as the rollout of a recently conducted survey on sustainability in consumer shopping habits. The survey showed that 90% of consumers rate environmental sustainability as personally important to them and 74% say it is important for retail to publicize environmental sustainability programs. The survey also found that 57% of consumers believe shopping in stores is more sustainable than shopping online.

Summit attendees participated in a site visit of Brickell City Centre, a $1.05-billion, 4.9 million-square-foot mixed-use development that features pioneering sustainability technology. Sustainability elements include the $30-million Climate Ribbon, an elevated trellis connecting the project’s three city blocks and acting as an environmental management system.
