Canadian malls’ retail sales per square foot climbed in 2019

January 22, 2020

Toronto’s Yorkdale Shopping Centre is Canada’s most productive mall in terms of sales, according to the 2019 Canadian Shopping Centre Study, conducted by the Retail Council of Canada and by Engagement Agents.

The property’s 2019 sales per square foot increased by 3 percent year on year, to $1,964. Vancouver, British Columbia’s CF Pacific Centre was the next most productive center, with sales per square foot there rising by 10 percent year on year, to $1,865. Following them was CF Toronto Eaton Centre, whose year-on-year sales grew by 2 percent, to $1,592.

Sales increased at most of Canada’s top shopping centers. “What online shopping has done is really incentivized retailers and mall property owners to become very creative and very agile,” said Diane J. Brisebois, Retail Council of Canada’s president and CEO, speaking to Yahoo Finance. “I think everyone understands now that you’re not just refreshing your space, but you’re constantly reinventing. That means healthier budgets for capital expenditures on experiential marketing, product design and display. We’ve never seen so much capital in those areas from our retailers and shopping centers.”

Canada’s top retail property owners and retailers will convene at the ICSC Whistler Conference & Deal Making, to be held January 26–28. Register here.
