The A$660 million (nearly $500 million) expansion of Chadstone Shopping Centre, in Melbourne, Australia, opens today. The 56-year-old center is considered to be the largest in the southern hemisphere and one of Australia’s marquee retail centers. Owners Vicinity Centres and Gandel Group hired architecture firm CallisonRTKL as concept designer and The Buchan Group as executive architect. The space accommodates 100 new retailers and entertainment offerings, including a Legoland amusement center.
“This world-class architecture reflects the essence of leading flagship retail and iconic locations from around the globe and perfectly showcases the premium customer experience on offer at Chadstone,” said Angus McNaughton, CEO and managing director of Vicinity Centres.
Chadstone’s new claim to fame is a 31-meter-high (roughly 100 feet), 7,000-square meter (about 75,300 square feet) grid-shell glass roof, the first of its kind on the continent, creating a dramatic, column-free space. The design, produced in collaboration with specialist engineers and research departments at the universities of Stuttgart and Bath, was achieved using 3-D parametric modeling.
“The client didn’t want just any roof,” said Jorge Beroiz, a CallisonRTKL director. “They wanted the best roof in the world — one that could redefine the boundaries of what is possible. Every single panel of glass is different. Every node is different. I don’t think I’ll ever design another roof quite like this in my career.”
Chadstone Shopping Centre opened in 1960 as the first regional shopping center in Victoria. Since Gandel Group’s 1983 purchase of the center, Chadstone has undergone a total of 34 redevelopments and quadrupled in size.
