7 Charities to Support During the Ukraine Crisis

March 10, 2022

ICSC has compiled a list of available charities to which to donate during the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Ukraine.

1. Alight
https://wearealight.org/ukraine-response/

Alight sees and helps every person make meaningful change in the world, from displaced and marginalized communities in Africa, Asia and the Americas to … anyone, anywhere. Alight is responding to the emergency needs of people still inside Ukraine. Our team is procuring medical supplies like freeze-dried-plasma transfusion kits, wound dressings, pain relievers and more in Poland and transporting them into Ukraine to groups holed up in bomb shelters and hospitals that need to refill resupplies. The supplies it provides also include baby food, diapers, sanitary items, blankets and phone chargers so people can stay connected with loved ones.

Alight is based at the Medyka, Poland border crossing, where temperatures have been frigid. Exposure is a real concern, especially for people crossing the border in the middle of the night. Alight is distributing 1,000 blankets a day, as well as mittens, hats and socks. It’s putting up a warming tent with heaters to give Ukrainian families a respite from the cold as they wait for transportation away from the border area. It also has brought in other items to make the border crossing more welcoming, such as trash cans for garbage and cleaning supplies. The wheelchairs it brought in were put to use immediately to bring elderly Ukrainians across the border to their waiting families. Other critical needs it is answering: safe transport for families, safe and secure shelter and support for host communities that have generously welcomed Ukrainians.

2. Heart to Heart International
https://www.hearttoheart.org/ukraine-crisis/

Heart to Heart International seeks to improve healthcare access in the U.S. and around the world by ensuring quality care is provided equitably in medically under-resourced communities and in disaster situations.

HHI will ship $20 million, or 13 tons, of medicine and medical supplies to Warsaw. Hope Worldwide will transport the aid into Ukraine for the Ministry of Health to distribute to hospitals and clinics throughout Ukraine. HHI also is preparing to ship 6,750 hygiene kits to be delivered to Poland to support Convoy of Hope’s refugee work. It will sending another 10,000 to Romania to support Project Hope’s efforts to help Ukrainian refugees and people still in Ukraine. HHI continues to evaluate and process requests for medicines, medical supplies and hygiene kits from other nonprofit organizations and governmental departments.

3. International Committee of the Red Cross
https://www.icrc.org/en/humanitarian-crisis-ukraine

The work of the ICRC is based on the Geneva Conventions of 1949, their Additional Protocols, its statutes and those of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, and the resolutions of the International Conferences of the Red Cross and Red Crescent. The ICRC is an independent, neutral organization ensuring humanitarian protection and assistance for victims of armed conflict and other situations of violence. It takes action in response to emergencies and at the same time promotes respect for international humanitarian law and its implementation in national law.

The ICRC has been working in Ukraine since 2014. Its operations in the country are among the 10 largest ICRC operations worldwide, with over 600 staff members. Working closely with the Ukrainian Red Cross Society, it is increasing its response to the humanitarian needs in Ukraine. Its support includes emergency assistance like food, water and other essential items. It also supports hospitals and primary healthcare facilities with medical equipment and emergency preparedness. It repairs water stations and supports households to rehabilitate their damaged homes. It also helps families separated by the conflict to reconnect.

4. GlobalGiving
https://www.globalgiving.org/projects/ukraine-crisis-relief-fund/

GlobalGiving’s mission is to transform aid and philanthropy to accelerate community-led change. All donations to the Ukraine Crisis Relief Fund will support humanitarian assistance in impacted communities in Ukraine and surrounding regions where Ukrainian refugees have fled. GlobalGiving’s local partners are bringing relief to terrified and displaced communities, and it needs resources to continue their lifesaving work. Donations to the Ukraine Crisis Relief Fund will provide shelter, food and clean water for refugees; health and psychosocial support; access to education and economic assistance; and more.

5. ShelterBox USA
https://www.shelterboxusa.org/the-ukraine-crisis-explained/

ShelterBox builds awareness of global displacement and facilitates providing families with lifesaving shelter and essential tools and supplies that will enable them to rebuild their homes and transform their lives after disaster. A ShelterBox team has been deployed to Eastern Europe in response to the Ukraine crisis to assess the situation. It will send aid and is working to understand the type of emergency shelter and essential aid items affected people will need most. Temperatures are below freezing at night, homes are being damaged and many are fleeing while others are being left behind. The organization is committed to supporting Ukrainian families affected by this crisis.

6. Doctors Without Borders
https://www.doctorswithoutborders.org/

Every day, Doctors Without Borders delivers emergency medical aid to those who need it most. As it carries out this work, it is guided by the rules of medical ethics, particularly the duty to provide care without causing harm to individuals or groups. It’s also committed to safeguarding its patients’ rights to autonomy, confidentiality and informed consent. It respects the dignity of its patients, which includes respect for their cultural and religious beliefs. In accordance with these principles, it endeavors to provide the best medical care possible to all patients.

Experienced emergency and specialist medical staff currently are entering Ukraine. More will continue to arrive to support teams already working in the country. Teams are preparing for a range of scenarios, including providing surgical care, emergency medicine and mental health support for displaced people. Your 100% tax-deductible gift helps Doctors Without Borders respond quickly to medical humanitarian emergencies. Unrestricted funds allow it to allocate its resources where the needs are greatest, including for operations in and around Ukraine. It is not able to earmark funds exclusively for its work in Ukraine. However, it is possible to earmark your gift to its Emergency Relief Fund. If you wish to earmark your gift to the Emergency Relief Fund, contact the organization at 888-392-0392 or email donations@newyork.msf.org.

7. Disaster Aid USA
https://disasteraidusa.org/donate

DAUSA focuses on rebuilding communities by assessing their needs, securing and delivering the aid by its Disaster Aid Response Teams while working with the people suffering from the effects caused by the disaster.

Greater than 90% of every dollar you donate goes directly to aid for disaster survivors, including storage and delivery of the box and contents or the equipment provided and the training and deployment of the DARTs that deliver the aid package to ensure that your donation goes directly to the families who need help. Less than 10% is used for administrative costs to help DAUSA share its mission with more people and to give those who join its team of volunteers the tools to help spread the word about DAUSA.
