Equitable Development begins with human engagement, where the engagement seeks to better involve a community to achieve long-term and sustainable outcomes, processes, relationships, discourse, decision-making or implementation. To be successful, it must encompass strategies, approaches and processes that are sensitive to the community context in which it occurs. It also places a premium on fostering and enhancing trust as a critical element in long-term, sustainable engagement to achieve an effective impact. 

This session will evaluate what challenges and successes development projects will confront when the local community is engaged during the design phases. Participants will learn how to facilitate a more inclusive framework of guiding principles that are grounded around geographical proximity, special interest, affiliation and specific issues affecting well-being. Through case studies, participants will assess how equitable development practices improve foot traffic and the number of customer trips, increase the frequency of transactions and more importantly extend the length of the consumer dwell time. Additionally, contributors will learn how to establish equitable performance measures, how to determine resilient project characteristics and how to apply creativity in order to result in an impactful and sustainable project that knits successfully into the adjacent community.
