Small Business Job Openings Declined, but Compensation Plans Still Will Rise

September 6, 2023

According to NFIB’s August jobs report, small business owners are experiencing a slight decrease in job openings they can’t fill; 40% reported unfilled positions in August, down 2 percentage points from the previous month. Still, 26% plan to raise compensation in the coming three months, reflecting efforts to retain and attract talent in a competitive job market. The report also showed that labor quality remains a significant concern for 24% of small business owners while the percentage of owners citing labor costs as the top issue has decreased to 8%.
