Macerich is teaming up with omni-channel retail concept WithMe to expand its properties’ multichannel capabilities. WithMe plans to open stores and kiosks in Macerich centers in markets that include Chicago, Los Angeles, New York City, San Francisco, and Washington, D.C.
WithMe blends the digital and the physical. The stores, which sell a mix of brands available in stores and online, enable shoppers to browse and to touch physical goods in-store and order related products or out-of-stock items for home delivery. WithMe is building modular common-area stores measuring anywhere from 100 to 1,000 square feet to accommodate a range of ways to browse and buy merchandise at Macerich centers.
“Macerich is the ideal partner for WithMe,” said Jonathan Jenkins, WithMe’s founder and CEO. “We were looking to expand into premier shopping centers that consumers know and love, and where traditional and pure-play brands want to be, in the country’s best markets.”
The first Macerich-WithMe collaboration is to open in May at the company’s Santa Monica (Calif.) Place. This WithMe unit will operate for six weeks inside the shopping center’s new Century 21 department store.
WithMe at Santa Monica Place will feature a floor-to-ceiling display called the Pixel Wall, crafted from 900 screens that form shelves and hanging racks. Digital displays and interactive fixtures will offer product highlights and video content about the brands. Fitting rooms will have interactive mirror displays enabling shoppers to make purchases or to request alternate products without leaving the room. RFID tags on the products provide ready information. Customers will enjoy various delivery options, including same-day delivery by Deliv and delivery to a location of their choice within two days.
“Macerich is always focused on bringing the best new retail concepts to our portfolio,” said Eric Salo, the firm’s executive vice president and chief strategy officer. “With its incredible technology that creates personalized, online and offline shopping experiences plus an ever-changing array of brand activations, WithMe will be a signature draw for our mall shoppers.”
