ICSC PAC and the 2018 midterms

November 14, 2018

Susan Askew, the executive director of the ICSC PAC, and the rest of the Global Public Policy team followed very closely the outcomes of the November midterm elections. The ICSC PAC is the political action committee of ICSC and helps to elect the most qualified pro-real estate/retail industry, pro-business candidates to federal office by contributing financially to their campaigns.

With one Senate race undecided, the ICSC PAC overall success rate on Nov. 6 stands at 84%. Here is the breakdown:

Senate

54% of the money ICSC PAC invested in Senate races went to winning candidates, with 12 of 17 Senate candidates that ICSC PAC supported winning their races.

  • Unfortunately, one of ICSC’s most steadfast e-fairness champions, Senator Heidi Heitkamp (D-ND), lost her re-election race.
  • Senator Joe Donnelly (D-IN), also supported by the ICSC PAC, was defeated by challenger Mike Braun.

House

88% of the money ICSC PAC invested in House races went to winning candidates. 94 of 108 House candidates that ICSC PAC supported won their elections.

  • Three moderate Republicans serving on the House Ways & Means Committee, Congressman Carlos Curbelo (FL-26), Congressman Erick Paulsen (MN-03) and Congressman Peter Roskam (IL-6), all lost to challengers.

Post-election, ICSC PAC hosted a webinar focused on the 2018 midterm election results with The Cook Political Report’s David Wasserman. You can view the webinar by clicking here.

ICSC PAC is independent and bipartisan. All candidates are evaluated based on their support for the industry and not on party affiliation. The ICSC Committee on PAC Management meets two or three times each year to decide which candidates will receive ICSC PAC support.  For more information, contact saskew@icsc.org.
