ICSC Announces 2018 VIVA Award Winners

May 21, 2018

NEW YORK (May 21, 2018) — ICSC is pleased to announce the recipients of the 2018 VIVA Awards. This award is named for its celebration of Vision, Innovation, Value and Achievement in design, development, sustainability, marketing and retail. The VIVA Awards honor projects from around the globe.

Developers, architects and marketers compete for the VIVA Awards to cement their status as key global retail real estate players. The awards were judged by panels of industry professionals and presented during a ceremony at RECon, the premier retail real estate convention, in Las Vegas. The 2018 winners clearly demonstrate significant contributions to retail real estate, from cutting-edge design to cultural statement.

The 2018 VIVA Awards program recognized the following properties and honorees for outstanding achievement in three categories: design and development; retail; and global marketing.

Design and Development winner: Siam Discovery — The Exploratorium

Siam Piwat Co., Ltd., together with architect firms Nendo and Urban Architects Co., Ltd., were recognized for their Siam Discovery — The Exploratorium project, located in Bangkok, Thailand. The center’s transformative redevelopment resulted in an innovative lifestyle laboratory featuring merchandise from 50 retailers, displayed in unique, category-specific zones, and employed the latest digital technology to offer an interactive, experiential retail environment.

Design and Development honorees:

  • Polygone Riviera, Cagnes-sur-Mer, France
  • Promenade Sainte-Catherine, Bordeaux, France
  • The Village at Westfield Topanga, Woodland Hills, Calif.

Retail Design winner (small format): Riedel Wine Bar & Cellar — Asia-Pacific

Gaysorn Group and architect firm Chapman Taylor were recognized for the Riedel Wine Bar & Cellar, in Bangkok, Thailand. The world-renowned glassware company’s first foray into the food-and-beverage category incorporates an elegant and luxurious fine-dining restaurant; a cocktail bar; a wine cellar and tasting area; a private dining room; and an al fresco terrace, all accented with bespoke lighting fixtures and pieces of the iconic Riedel glassware.

Retail Design winner (large format): Saks Food Hall by Pusateri's — Canada

Architect firm Alex Rebanks and interior-design firm GH+A Design Studios were recognized for their Saks Food Hall by Pusateri's, at Hudson’s Bay Queen Street, in Toronto. The space features a variety of engaging culinary stations, seating areas and a vast selection of high-end merchandise. Luxurious materials such as marble and granite are interspersed with metal, mirror, aluminum and glass to create an elegant and refined market atmosphere.

Retail Design honorees:

  • Masseria by Nicholas Stefanelli, at Union Market District, Washington, D.C.
  • Massimo Dutti, Mexico City
  • Nando's at SmartCentres Oshawa North II, Oshawa, Ontario

Oxford Properties Group and AIMCo received the top honors for FashionCAN. This two-day event included a series of runway and fashion events plus a unique See Now, Buy Now pop-up outlet featuring the 2017 spring-summer collections of 16 Canadian designers. The event generated 23.6 million Twitter impressions, 70.7 million impressions of event publicity and an additional 84.5 million publicity impressions for the center’s newest — and unopened — 300,000-square-foot expansion wing.
