Seventeen months in operation isn’t too old to call yourself the new kid on the block, right?
We are IONNA, the joint venture founded by BMW, General Motors, Honda, Hyundai, Kia, Mercedes-Benz, Stellantis and Toyota, and fast becoming North America’s leading electric vehicle charging network. With 21 Rechargeries open and 20 more in active construction, the IONNA brand has expanded across nearly 40% of the states that make up the continental U.S. Add in our more than 3,000 contracted bays and IONNA is officially hitting full stride in the second half of the year.
It’s a reasonable question. In all fairness, we did coin a new term.
A Rechargery is about recharging the driver as much as their vehicle. It’s an EV charging station they can count on, that puts as much emphasis on the experience as the ability to charge. For too long, EV drivers have been hidden in back lots, left to charge with unreliable hardware, in less-than-ideal conditions, with nothing to do but sit and wait. Today’s electrification industry can feel like a maze of technology — overwhelming and more than a little cold. We saw an opportunity to add back some old-school charm and much needed familiarity to a potentially daunting landscape. But don’t mistake mild mannered for meekness.
IONNA has serious goals and serious people making them happen. Pulling from talent all over the industry, including automakers, hardware manufacturers, software manufacturers and other charge-point operators, the IONNA team is bringing decades worth of lessons learned to this venture and building a network our drivers can trust.
“Charging an EV is an inherent part of the ownership experience and to date it has not met the standard that EV drivers expect,” said Bradley Some, IONNA’s director of site acquisition. “IONNA is on a mission is to raise the bar and turn what some see as a tedious chore into an enjoyable experience.”
The average IONNA EV driver spends a half hour recharging their vehicle. This is more than 30 minutes that an untapped audience could be engaging in opportunistic retail and recreational experiences. The phrase “two birds, one stone” comes to mind.
