Each year ICSC encourages outstanding achievement and innovation in Europe’s retail real estate through the European Shopping Centre Awards. Here are this year’s honorees.

REFURBISHMENTS AND/OR EXPANSIONS (LARGE)

Cascais, Portugal

• The center’s two-phase refurbishment included the addition of Cascais Kitchen — an enhanced food hall that evokes a traditional street fair.

COMMENDATION

Smart Park

Athens, Greece

Owner-Developer: REDS S.A. (Yialou Emporiki & Touristiki S.A.)

Architects: Aeter, Archcon, Broadway Malyan, RTKL

• Smart Park comprises three retail buildings and one restaurant on a 91,000-square-meter plot in the municipality of Spata, near Athens, Greece. The open-air development also incorporates 30,000 square meters of high-quality public green space, an outdoor cinema and stage, an archaeological exhibit area, a dancing water fountain, and ample relaxation and rest zones.

• The two-year, €85 million renovation included the addition of some 8,000 square meters.

l Iso Omena’s four-year-long, €270 million expansion and redevelopment added 40,000 square meters of gross leasable area.

REGENERATION AWARD

Catharinasteeg

Leiden, Netherlands

Owner: UBS Asset Management

Developer: MRP Development

Architect: Rijnboutt

• Catharinasteeg incorporates new buildings with 14 regenerated and restored historical buildings, connected by expansive public spaces. The paved, lushly landscaped, pedestrian-friendly development offers a unique retail, leisure, dining and residential experience.

• Muse is the focal point of a multifunctional complex comprising a retail podium, residences and offices, on an 80,000-square-meter site in the heart of the amphitheater district of Metz, France.
