7 projects to watch, including the former Six Flags in New Orleans

May 14, 2021

In Mobile, Alabama, Crescent Construction & Development has signed coffee shop and market Nova Market and exercise studio Pure Barre as first-floor tenants for its new The Lofts at The Lofts at Midtown, which also includes 24 residential units. The project is scheduled to open this summer.

Craig International is developing District 121, a $250 million, 17.85-acre mixed-use project next to the Craig Ranch master-planned community in McKinney, Texas. Phase 1 — which includes The Commons, with a 200,000-square-foot office building, 40,000 square feet of retail and restaurant space, an 800-space parking garage and green space — breaks ground this month.

Scottsdale Development Partners is completing a $1.5 million renovation of its 69,755-square-foot The Shops at Dynamite Creek in Scottsdale, Arizona, that includes new paint and light fixtures. Ace Hardware anchors the 20-year-old center, whose lineup includes local food-and-beverage and health-and-wellness services.

Metro Denver’s first transit-oriented development needs some tweaking to stay viable, city officials say. Currently known as CityCenter Englewood, the vacancy-plagued project is part of the former Cinderella City Mall, which opened in Englewood, Colorado, in 1978. The city’s chief redevelopment officer said the project needs more density and will add hotel, office and residential. The site is home to Ross Dress for Less, Harbor Freight and Walmart.

Developers turned an empty, 107,000-square-foot former Kmart in Hershey, Pennsylvania, into a multitenant center called Hershey Square. T.J.Maxx just opened its 22,702-square-foot store at the center, joining Planet Fitness, Five Below and Big Lots. Where the Wild Things Play, a 4,000-square-foot indoor play space for children, will open in June.

A city-run panel is choosing between two development proposals for a 146.2-acre former Six Flags amusement park in New Orleans that the operator closed in the wake of Hurricane Katrina 16 years ago. One proposal, called Bayou Phoenix and led by local businessman Troy Henry, calls for a water park, hotel, sports complex and travel center. The other, backed by S.H.I.E.L.D. 1 and New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees, would include an urban farm, educational centers and a transportation hub.

Developers are asking for permission to transform a former Stein Mart anchor building at Lion’s Head Village in Nashville into a 248-unit apartment building. The center is anchored by Target and Trader Joe’s.
