Black Rock Coffee Bar: The Portland, Oregon-based boutique coffee operator continues to brew up a strong footprint in Phoenix, opening an 800-square-foot location this week. It’s the second drive-thru-only store the company has opened in Phoenix and the 19th Black Rock in the Phoenix area, bringing total locations to 93 across Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Oregon, Texas and Washington.
Papa John’s: The company will deliver more pizza to Texans thanks to the largest U.S. franchise deal in its history. Franchisee operator Sun Holdings signed a deal to open 100 Papa John’s units across the state through 2029.
The Original Hot Dog Factory: The Atlanta-born chain will open two locations in Atlanta this month, in the suburbs of Alpharetta and Lawrenceville. The company opened a unit last month in Woodstock, Georgia. The franchise now has 23 locations, including five in Atlanta, six in Philadelphia and two in New York City.
Everbowl: Private equity firm Sloan Capital acquired the rights to open 50 franchise units in Texas for this concept, which serves fruit and granola on beds of acai, pitaya or matcha. Sloan opened its first Everbowl Sept. 9 in Dallas and is seeking subfranchisors to operate the units. The typical unit is 800 to 1,000 square feet, and only a handful are set up for in-store dining. The company has 28 locations and 190 planned.
Portillo’s: The Chicago-based regional quick-service operator plans to take its gravy-dipped, Italian beef sandwiches and its hot dogs topped with celery salt and peppers on the road with money from its planned IPO. Portillo’s plans to grow from 67 restaurants to more than 600 by 2046, according to SEC filings. It already had seven locations lined up to have opened between November 2020 and the end of 2021.
Market 7: Entrepreneur Mary Blackford’s 7,000-square-foot food hall will give underserved communities in Washington, D.C.’s Wards 7 and 8 a source for prepared food and fresh produce from Black-owned businesses. When it opens early in 2022, it will feature eight food stalls with cuisines from throughout the African diaspora, as well as a small hydroponic farm.
Pink Taco: The cocktails-and-tacos concept will expand with two high-profile eateries in 2022, at 7 Times Square in New York City, and in Washington, D.C.’s historic Navy Yard neighborhood. Pink Taco has four locations, in Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles and Miami Beach, Florida.
