In August, U.S. small business sentiment declined for the first time since April, primarily due to concerns about inflation and the ongoing challenge of finding quality labor, according to an NFIB survey. Its Small Business Optimism Index dropped from 91.9 in July to 91.3 in August, the 20th consecutive month in which sentiment remained below its long-term average. This underscores the persistent struggles small businesses face, though on a positive note, there are signs labor shortages may be easing.
