ICSC European Volunteer Neil Mitchenall Has Died

September 30, 2022

Neil Mitchenall, co-founder of London-based retail property consultancy Lunson Mitchenall and longtime ICSC volunteer, has died from cancer at the age of 74.

ICSC honored Mitchenall for his volunteer work for the organization in 2012 with a Trustees’ Distinguished Service Award. He worked as a juror on ICSC’s award program and chaired ICSC Europe’s leasing group and ICSC Europe’s European Shopping Centre Trust, which promoted education of new professionals in the industry. Mitchenall also helped plan and promote ICSC Europe’s first retail leasing event.

When he wasn’t helping ICSC Europe grow, he was busy shaping the European shopping center industry with leasing and development advice. “He has had an amazing impact on our industry,” said Neil Hockin, director and head of shopping center leasing at Lunson Mitchenall and a colleague at multiple properties over the years. “He was truly a great colleague, mentor but most importantly friend.”

Mitchenall founded Lunson Mitchenall with David Lunson in 1980. According to a statement on the company’s website: “He was a pioneer in the shopping centre development and leasing market, advising on over 40 major schemes and projects across the country totaling more than 30 million square feet of space. His legacy can be seen at destinations including Lakeside, The Bullring, Cribbs Causeway, White Rose, Cabot Circus and Braehead.” The company also said Mitchenall championed the introduction of turnover leases.

The statement went on: “His enthusiasm, passion and zest for life has energised LM for over four decades and our company culture is testament to his collaborative spirit and genuine love for what he did. Throughout his career Neil showed great respect to everyone he met and worked with, he was generous with his time and will be missed by all those who had the pleasure of dealing with him. We all owe him a huge debt and he will be greatly missed by us all.”
